Unexpected Discovery of Hidden Treasure at a Yard Sale: How a €26 Drawing Turned Out to be a Renaissance Masterpiece

In 2017, a Massachusetts man wanders into a garage sale.

Among the trinkets and miscellaneous objects, a drawing representing the Virgin and Child catches his eye. Intrigued, he decides to buy it for $30, or about 26 euros.

He simply hangs it in his home and shows it to his friend Brainerd Phillipson, owner of a bookstore selling rare and antiquarian books.

The duo notices the initials A.D. written at the bottom of the drawing. Unsure, Brainerd hypothesizes that it could be a work by Albrecht Dürer, one of the greatest artists of the German Renaissance.

Since the last discovery of a Dürer drawing dates back more than 100 years, expectations are low.

In 2019, Clifford Schorer, an art dealer from Boston, stops by the bookstore. The two men talk and Brainerd shows him this famous drawing. Analyzing the engraving, Clifford says to himself: "Either it's the biggest fake I've ever seen, or it's a masterpiece."

This initial doubt leads to a fascinating three-year investigation. Clifford travels around the world to authenticate the sketch. The prestigious Agnews Gallery, in possession of the work, calls on two renowned Albrecht Dürer experts. Their verdict is final: the drawing is authentic.

Preserved in exceptional condition, this sketch dates from around 1503 and could be a draft of "The Virgin among a Multitude of Animals". This drawing, purchased for 26 euros, could be worth more than 10 million dollars, or approximately 8.7 million euros.
